How Amortization Works: Reading Your Loan Schedule Line by Line
Unlock the secrets of your loan amortization schedule. Understand principal vs. interest splits, and learn how to read your yearly table.
An amortization schedule is a detailed table showing each periodic payment, the interest charged, the principal paid, and the remaining loan balance. Although it looks like a simple grid of numbers, understanding how those rows are computed is the key to mastering your debt.
Reading the Columns
A standard amortization schedule has five columns:
- Timeline/Month: The payment period.
- Base Payment: Your fixed monthly installment.
- Interest Charged: The cost of borrowing for that month, computed on the remaining balance.
- Principal Paid: The remaining portion of your payment that reduces the loan balance.
- Remaining Balance: Your outstanding debt size.
The Amortization Shift
In the beginning, your balance is high, so the interest charged is high, meaning very little payment goes to principal. As the balance falls, the interest charged shrinks, causing the principal paid column to grow. This shift accelerates principal reduction toward the end of the term.
